Beware of Impaired Drivers in Colorado This Holiday Season

At Donaldson Law, LLC, our Denver car accident attorneys want all Colorado drivers to know that during the winter holidays, 40% of highway deaths are alcohol-related, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Unfortunately, our Colorado motorists are not immune to drunk drivers and the violent crashes, injuries, and fatalities their negligence causes year-round, especially during the holidays.

Here is what our fellow Coloradans need to know about the uptick in drunk driving traffic collisions this time of year.

Thanksgiving Holiday Accident and Fatality Reports Paint a Grim Travel Picture

The NHTSA reports that during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, over five years, more than 800 people lost their lives in crashes involving a drunk driver. The holiday period begins on Thanksgiving Eve when people typically begin to gather with family and friends. In fact, the NHTSA reported over the same time, 138 drivers involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve were drunk.

The National Safety Council (NSC) reports an even more grim projection, as they estimate 518 people may lose their lives on U.S. roads this Thanksgiving holiday period. While this projection includes all types of collisions, not just drunk driving crashes, if this estimate holds, Thanksgiving 2022 will experience the most roadway deaths since 2007.

An Average of 140 Americans Lose Their Lives in Alcohol-Related Crashes Over Christmas Day Each Year

Holiday parties, family reunions, and friendly gatherings can all lead to excessive drinking this time of year, which directly correlates to the number of drunk-driving crashes on our Colorado roadways, and alcohol-related road deaths.

On average, 140 Americans lose their lives in alcohol-related crashes over Christmas Day each year.

An Average of 120 Americans Lose Their Lives in Alcohol-Related Crashes Over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Each Year

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are just behind Christmas as the days with the highest number of drunk driving fatalities in the country.

What’s more, New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day of the year for pedestrians.

On average, 120 Americans lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day last year.
